Motorola SB6120 Review – Don’t Buy Before You Read This

by

Dan Karas

I just got a great online deal on a Motorola SB6120 SURFboard Cable Modem, and would like to share my personal experience with this product by reviewing it here.

Overview:

I was pleasingly surprised at the amazing performance boost in my COX Cable Internet speeds. The SB6120 was reasonably priced, easy to install, and it’s raw speed will blow you away. I would highly recommend the Motorola Surfboard if you’re in the market for a cable modem.

What’s in the Box:

The first thing I noticed when the SB6120 arrived was that it was noticeably smaller and lighter then my old Linksys device. The modem came packaged with a small AC power adapter and Ethernet network patch cable. Also included was a quick cable setup diagram and a documentation CD containing an Adobe PDF SB6120 users manual.

SB6120 Installation:

Installation of my new Motorola Surfboard modem was very easy. I just disconnected & removed my old Linksys modem, connected the coaxial and network cables, and plugged it in. After installing the SB6120, I had to call my cable provider (Cox Cable in my case) and give them the serial number and MAC address of the new modem. These are printed on the modem and on the box. After following the Cox technicians simple instructions on rebooting my new modem, then restarting my home network router, I was online and happily surfing the Internet.

Motorola Surfboard Performance:

I couldn’t wait to jump over to speedtest.net to see what this baby could do. All I can say is WOW, I was getting over 30 Mbps download and almost 6 Mbps upload speed. These are very impressive numbers by any account, and a dramatic increase in speed over my old Linksys modems throughput.

Modem’s Key Features:

* Super Fast – No Lag in Online Gaming

* DOCSIS 3.0 backwards compatible to DOCSIS 2.0

* Up to 4x faster than DOCSIS 2.0 modems

* Gigabit Ethernet Port -10/100/1000 Base-T

* Very Easy to Install and Use

* No Additional Software Required

Conclusion:

The Motorola SB6120 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 eXtreme Broadband Cable Modem is not the cheapest modem you can buy, but in my honest opinion it’s one of the best values. The SB6120’s speed, performance, features, and excellent customer reviews made it a no brainer for me, and I am very satisfied with the one that I purchased.

SB6120 Video Review and Pictures:

You can see videos and pictures of the Motorola SB6120 Cable Modem that I couldn’t include here in my Motorola SB6120 Review at ISP1.US

Police crackdown on illegal tow operations in Sydney

New South Wales Police, in connection with the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority, Tow Truck Authority and Centrelink (the agency responsible for providing income support) conducted random checks on tow trucks on Thursday. The checks were carried out in Bankstown, a suburb in Sydney’s South-West.

According to police, 50 tow trucks were pulled over during the operation, coined “Operation Hook” between 8:30 a.m. AEST and 4 p.m. Of those, 26 were directed to report to a vehicle inspection facility for further investigation.

Police issued 70 infringement notices (fines) during the operation. 11 were for being unlicensed to conduct business as a tow truck driver or business, and 13 for having incorrectly secured loads. 17 vehicles were issued defect notices as part of the operation.

Tow truck operators (business owners) are required to make a payment of AUD$770 per year to the NSW government, while drivers are charged $152 per year for their licence. An additional charge for tow truck number plates of $292 per year also applies.

The maximum penalty for operators not being licensed correctly is $11,000 or 12 months imprisonment, drivers without the correct licence can be fined $5,500 or sentenced to 6 months.

Zimbabwe bans crop growing in urban areas

Farming in urban areas has been banned in the latest turn in the Zimbabwean government’s ‘crackdown’ on the country’s poor.

Zimbabwe is in the grip of a chronic drought and with food supplies running low, thousands fear starvation after they were told they could no longer supplement their food supply with crops grown themselves. A police spokesman told a UN news agency that they were under government instruction to prevent urban farming.

Police spokesman Wayne Bvudzijena said “a lot of harm is being done to the environment. Why can’t those who want to cultivate crops go to rural areas, where people are being allocated farms under the land reform programme?”

People living in urban areas had taken to growing their staple crop – maize – and other grains in patches of land near their houses. Much of the land being used had already been earmarked for cultivation, but the police have been told to ignore any such designations.

A non-governmental organisation, Environment Africa, agreed with some of the policy. “We totally understand and appreciate the need for urban people to supplement their incomes, but they should not do it the wrong way. Ideally, farming should be done on farms, not in towns. What we have witnessed is an irreparable damage to the environment, which will certainly have dire consequences for our beloved cities,” said an official.

A spokesman for the opposition — the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) — said that while planting on undesignated land, especially amid a maze of houses in townships, was not something they could approve, planting on designated areas should be allowed.

Such urban farming could produce up to 100,000t of grain in a good year, the spokesman added. He believes the government aims to drive urban people — who are often MDC supporters — out into the countryside, with the promise of getting land under the “reform program”.

As international concern about Zimbabwe grows, Kofi Annan plans to send a special envoy to assess the situation. However, he has not scheduled a date for the visit.

Your wedding should be something you have always dreamed of. Many girls, and men too although they may not want to admit it, spend years planning exactly how they want their special day to look. There are many different venues from which to choose, and outdoor weddings, Tucson are becoming more and more popular. There are, however, a few things to keep in mind when you are planning an outdoor wedding.

The first is the time of year and the weather you can expect. Perhaps you have always dreamed of a New Year’s Day wedding, but the weather during that time of year may not be conducive to an outdoor wedding. It is best to check traditional weather reports for the past few years, as well as current reports, to get an idea of what to expect. That way you can plan appropriate clothing for the bride and groom, the wedding party, and the guests as well. If it tends to be rainy, you can plan on having a canopy to keep everyone dry. Maybe it is going to be chilly. If so, you can rent some portable column heaters so everyone stays nice and toasty.

Next, think about the time of day you would like your wedding to be. Evening Outdoor Weddings, Tuscon can be gorgeous, especially at a luxurious location such as Reflections at the Buttes. Strategically placed lighting, whether electric or candle light, gives everything a sense of romance and allure. If the wedding is during the day, you will have to choose what kind of natural outdoor backdrop you would like such as a flower garden or perhaps some type of water feature.

After the ceremony itself, the next most important part of any wedding is the reception. If you are having an outdoor wedding, you may want to have an outdoor reception as well. On the other hand, perhaps you and your guests have had enough of nature and want to retire to a luxurious room where you can sit, relax, and celebrate the beginning of your new life. The most important piece of advice is to remember whatever you plan will be perfect. Whether it is outside or inside, when you and your spouse say those two magic words, the location will not matter. The fact that you are simply together in the moment will.

Red Star (Crvena Zvezda) Belgrade advanced to the Serbia and Montenegro football cup finals, after defeating Partizan Belgrade with a score of 2:0 yesterday. The first goal was scored by Nikola Žigi? in the tenth minute (10′). Krivokapi? scored the other goal in the final moments of the match – 90′.

The game between city rivals was attended by only about 8,000 fans. Aside from heavy rain, many fans of both Red Star and Partizan decided to boycott the game.

Red Star’s fans were forbidden from performing their traditional choreography at the beginning of the match, probably due to riots that took place the last time Red Star and Partizan played a regular league game. Partizan’s fans displayed a large sign reading “Football Association of Serbia and Montenegro = mafia.”

Red Star has a chance to win the cup against Železnik, while Partizan is on its way to win the league with a 7 point lead.

Pfizer and Microsoft team up against Viagra spam

New York –”Buy cheap Viagra through us – no prescription required!” Anyone with an active email account will recognize lines like this one. According to some reports, unsolicited advertisements (spam) for Viagra and similar drugs account for one in four spam messages.

BACKGROUND

Spamming remains one of the biggest problems facing email users today. While users and systems administrators have improved their defenses against unsolicited email, many spammers now insert random words or characters into their letters in order to bypass filters. The Wikipedia article Stopping email abuse provides an overview of the various strategies employed by companies, Internet users and systems administrators to deal with the issue.

Ever since pharmaceutical giant Pfizer promised to cure erectile dysfunction once and for all with its blue pills containing the drug sildenafil citrate, spammers have tried to tap into male anxiety by offering prescription-free sales of unapproved “generic” Viagra and clones such as Cialis soft tabs. Legislation like the U.S. CAN-SPAM act has done little to stem the tide of email advertising the products.

Now Pfizer has entered a pledge with Microsoft Corporation, the world’s largest software company, to address the problem. The joint effort will focus on lawsuits against spammers as well as the companies they advertise. “Pfizer is joining with Microsoft on these actions as part of our shared pledge to reduce the sale of these products and to fight the senders of unsolicited e-mail that overwhelms people’s inboxes,” said Jeff Kindler, executive vice president at Pfizer.

Microsoft has filed civil actions against spammers advertising the websites CanadianPharmacy and E-Pharmacy Direct. Pfizer has filed lawsuits against the two companies, and has taken actions against websites which use the word “Viagra” in their domain names. Sales of controlled drugs from Canadian pharmacies to the United States are illegal, but most drugs sold in Canada have nevertheless undergone testing by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. This is not the case for many of the Viagra clones sold by Internet companies and manufactured in countries like China and India. While it was not clear that CanadianPharmacy was actually shipping drugs from Canada, Pfizer’s general counsel, Beth Levine, claimed that the company filled orders using a call center in Montreal, reported the Toronto Star.

For Microsoft’s part, they allege that the joint effort with Pfizer is part of their “multi-pronged attack on the barrage of spam.” As the creator of the popular email program Outlook, Microsoft has been criticized in the past for the product’s spam filtering process. Recently, Microsoft added anti-spam measures to its popular Exchange server. Exchange 2003 now includes support for accessing so-called real-time block lists, or RTBLs. An RTBL is a list of the IP addresses maintained by a third party; the addresses on the list are those of mailservers thought to have sent spam recently. Exchange 2003 can query the list for each message it receives.

The US community organizing group Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) will end its operations due to dwindling funds. The group said in a statement that it would close most of its field offices by April 1.

The heads of the organization said in a joint statement that “ACORN’s members have a great deal to be proud of—from promoting homeownership to helping rebuild New Orleans, from raising wages to winning safer streets, from training community leaders to promoting voter participation—ACORN members have worked hard to create stronger communities, a more inclusive democracy, and a more just nation.”

The group, founded in 1970, played a prominent role in the 2008 US presidential elections, as it conducted many voter registration drives and fundraising for then-Senator Barack Obama, among other Democratic candidates. The organization first became scrutinized during the 2006 mid-term elections, when some of its employees were accused of voter fraud. Matters got worse in 2009 after an undercover video revealed two of its employees giving advice on how to set up a prostitution ring and commit tax fraud.

The Internet group Project Chanology today held protests critical of the Church of Scientology. The protests marked what would have been the 49th birthday of Lisa McPherson, who is claimed to be a victim of the Church of Scientology’s practices. Lisa died in 1995 during a running of what Scientologists refer to as an Introspection Rundown, a procedure intended to help Church members deal with a psychotic or deeply traumatic event.

Protests were planned throughout the day in 14 countries and over 50 different cities. The estimation of total protesters world wide for Feb. 10, 2008 is 9,250 people.

Wikinews had correspondents at a number of protest locations to report on the events. This article was updated throughout the day with reports from around the globe.
