John Wayne fans I hope youre ready this Christmas holidays because a classic novel is making its second appearance in a film. You will be able to watch True Grit online starting Dec. 22.The movie will be produced by the Coen brothers.
This will be the second adaption of Charles Portis novel. An original movie was produced in 1969, but many considered it to have been directed in a different direction than the novel. This 2010 version is getting literature fanatics excited as it is suppose to be a lot closer to the novel, True Grit.
Ethan Coen even stated himself:
Its party a question of point-of-view. The book is entirely in the voice of the 14-year-old girl. That sort of tips the feeling of it over a certain way. I think [the book is] much funnier than the 1969 movie was so I think, unfortunately, they lost a lot of humour in both the situations and in her voice. It also ends differently than the movie did. You see the main characterthe little girl 25 years later when shes an adult. Another way in which its a little bit different from the movie and maybe this is just because of the time the movie was madeis that its a lot tougher and more violent than the movie reflects. Which is part of whats interesting about it.
Ethan has announced publicly all the differences between the True Grit novel and the 1969 movie adaptation. These differences were the main driving force to development this 2010 version. This second adaptation will be more focussed on the little girl to be more similar to the novel.
Realizing that in order to develop the movie more closely related to the novel, the Coen brothers have put out an extensive search in casting to fill this role. The little girl, Mattie Ross, is aged 14 in the movie and the brothers looked for a young girl between the age of 12 and 16. Casting began back in November 2009 and was held in Texas. Over 15 000 applicants were auditioned to fill this role. Hailee Steinfeld was the lucky winner who was characterized as both simple and having steely nerves. Such an extensive search was made, again because of the importance Mattie Rosss character plays in the film. Again and again, Ethan has emphasized that the movie will only be a closer replica to the novel if it is done properly in the eyes of Mattie Ross. Specifically, he told the New York Times, We were aware if the kid doesnt work, theres no movie.
Again, we are days away from the premier of this movie. If you are a novel lover and have read the book, True Grit, then watching the movie will be well worth your time. You might have to wait a few days to wait closer to New Years to see the movie in case theatres sell out as True Grit has been awaited for my many. If the movie gets online early, then perhaps you can watch True Grit online. Hope you enjoy the movie and happy holidays!
