“Five singers, one drummer. No guitars, no bass, no keyboards but nevertheless an unbelievable melodic metal experience.”

That’s how the official website of van Canto describes the band. Hailing from Germany, van Canto are what is called an a capella metal band, the pioneers of this new genre.

The band released their debut, A Storm to Come, in December 2006. Exactly a year later, van Canto announced a global signing to Gun Records/Sony BMG, and their debut was released worldwide on December 14.

Van Canto are now experiencing considerable success. They recently provided support for Finnish symphonic power metal band Nightwish, as well as receiving a slot at the internationally famous Wacken Open Air festival in Germany. The prestigious event sees them sharing the bill with acts such as Hatebreed, Sonata Arctica, As I Lay Dying, Soilwork, Children of Bodom, Nightwish, Lordi and headline act Iron Maiden.

Van Canto’s second album will be recorded across this month and next, with famed producer Charlie Bauerfeind, although no release date has yet been confirmed.

In light of recent events, van Canto member and founder Stefan Schmidt has given the band’s first interview in English, all previous interviews being in German or Italian. Wikinews now exclusively brings you that interview below.

According to outgoing Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, an explosion that was “equivalent to a 2,000 lb. bomb” and registered 0.5 on the Richter scale decimated an area of Danvers and is also a “Thanksgiving miracle.”

The explosion occurred around 2:45 am EST, this morning in the Danversport area of Danvers, Massachusetts at the plant for solvent and ink manufacturer, CAI Inc. The explosion, which was caught on security camera and was heard up to over 25-50 miles away in southern Maine and New Hampshire.

The explosion damaged over 90 homes, blowing out windows and knocking some houses off their foundations. Officials believe that some of the more extensively damaged houses will have to be leveled and rebuilt. Some of the buildings damaged included a bakery, boats at a close by marina and the New England Home for the Deaf, an assisted-living facility for people who are deaf or deafblind and elderly residents requiring constant care. “These people are extremely fragile,” said state Rep. Ted Speliotis, D-Danvers, whose district includes the affected area. “Many of them have Alzheimer’s and other illnesses. It’s clear they can’t stay here long, but it’s clear they won’t be able to return for quite a while.”

Danvers Fire Chief James P. Tutko toured the area by helicopter and said many residents would be kept from their homes for the foreseeable future. “It looks like a war zone, that’s the only thing I can say,” Tutko said. When asked about the loss of no life at all, he responded “Somebody out there likes us.” Finally, he said that finding out the cause of the explosion would take days.

Outgoing governor Mitt Romney toured the area and said the explosion was a “Thanksgiving miracle” as the explosion was “equivalent to a 2,000 lb bomb going off in a residential neighborhood,” and that no one was killed and only about 10 people suffered only minor injuries in area that included over 300 residents. Residents of the area have been evacuated to the Danvers High School where temporary shelter has been set up by the American Red Cross of Massachusetts Bay. Donations are being taken for residents affected by the explosion. Residents are also being told to start filing insurance claims right away and to keep track of their expenses for items bought.

There were minor environmental concerns due to water runoff of chemicals. According the Environmental Protection Agency‘s on-scene coordinator Mike Nalipinski, preliminary tests showed low levels of toluene, a solvent, but said it was nothing of significance. Water runoff from the water used by firefighters left a purple sheen on the river and tests were being conducted. However, the water is not a local drinking water supply and the chemical evaporates quickly. Chief Tutko said there was no risk of toxic fumes getting into the air.

An Eastern Propane facility was also located near the area, however, it was not the source of the explosion. A spokesman for the company said that although the property suffered some minor damage, their tanks are secure.

According to WHDH television, a person who answered the telephone at CAI’s Georgetown, Massachusetts headquarters refused comment, and a telephone message left at the company president’s home was not immediately returned.

Our ducted air conditioners and heaters keep us comfortable in both summer and winter time. We depend on them so heavily, in fact, that they can become clogged up with dirt and debris. While we might clean the outside and even wash out the filter from time to time, did you know that other things can get trapped in the system and cause health problems?

What Gets Trapped in Your HVAC System?

Ducted heating and cooling systems are generally very reliable and also very effective at keeping us comfortable during extreme weather. The problem is that insects, dust, pollen, black mold, fungal spores, and other allergens can all become trapped inside vents, pipes, and ducts. When the system is operational, these allergens get spread around the home. This is when air duct cleaning in Union County, NJ is a good idea.

The big problem is that without regular air duct cleaning every year, all of this nasty debris gets blown around the home. This can cause the following issues:

* Respiratory problems such as coughing, sneezing, and wheezing

* An exacerbation of existing respiratory illnesses such as asthma

* Tiredness, headaches, migraines, and exhaustion due to black mold and susceptibility to allergens

* A worsening of conditions in people who are immunocompromised

Clearly, suffering from any of these health problems can lead to hospitalization and medical treatment.

What Can a Good Clean Do for You?

If you are suffering from any of these problems, it might be time to book a professional to come out and do a thorough air duct cleaning service. Contact Reel-strong.com and chat about how they can help clean out the ducts in your HVAC system and how it can purify the air in your home and make it safer.

Sales of automobiles in the United States fell as much as 35% in January, compared to the same month a year ago, as manufacturers reported their January sales.

Ford Motor Company NYSEF sales dropped 42% last month from the previous year. General Motors NYSEGM reported a 49% decline. Chrysler was hardest hit among the domestically owned manufacturers with a plunge of 55%.

The decline in sales has not been limited to just US manufacturers. Japanese automaker Toyota NYSETM reported a 32% drop in US sales from a year earlier, Nissan MotorsNASDAQNSANY dropped 30%, and Honda NYSEHMC sales dropped 28%.

Subaru and South Korean Hyundai Motor Company LSEHYUD were two of the few auto firms that reported an increase in sales. They posted gains of eight and fourteen percent, respectively.

On an annual basis, sales overall have also been plummeting. Industry-wide US car sales dropped 18% last year to 13.2 million automobiles.

GM announced today that it will offer voluntary buyouts to 22,000 employees in the US, in an effort to reduce its expenditures.

Last month, GM and Chrysler were given loans worth US$17.4 billion from the government after they warned of imminent bankruptcy.

70,000 General Motors employees go on strike

73,000 United Auto Workers (UAW) union members launched a nationwide strike today against General Motors (GM), the largest auto manufacturer in the United States.

UAW President Ron Gettelfinger said GM would need to meet pay, health care, and job security issues. Gettelfinge said, “This is nothing we wanted…No one benefits in a strike. But there comes a point where someone can push you off a cliff. That’s what happened here.”

The strike was officially launched at 11 a.m. EDT (UTC-4) today.

Negotiations were reportedly going to occur again this afternoon, but there have been no reports of any negotiating going on from either side.

80 facilities in 30 different states closed today because of the strike.

CNN reports that GM facilities in Mexico and Canada may close soon, too.

The vice president of global vehicle forecasts for CSM Worldwide, Michael Robinet, said today that dealerships in the US likely won’t feel the effects of the strike for several weeks.

A statement from GM today said, “We are disappointed in the UAW’s decision to call a national strike. The bargaining involved complex, difficult issues that affect the job security of our U.S. work force, and the long-term viability of the company. We are fully committed to working with the UAW to develop solutions together to address the competitive challenges facing General Motors. We will continue focusing our efforts on reaching an agreement as soon as possible.”

If the strike continues, UAW strike funds will supply each striker with US$200 a month and medical coverage.

In this current financial atmosphere where jobs are hard to find and the mountain of debts seem to be growing uncontrollably, every once in a while you may hear about matters that become bigger than ourselves like burden of debts. The need for taking drastic step like filing for bankruptcy may be the only way out. Bankruptcy is just not all about liquidation of your assets which is comes under chapter 7. In contrast to it, there is Chapter 13 of bankruptcy where your assets won’t be liquidated to pay your debts rather it works on the same line as seeking debt consolidation and credit counseling but with the intervention of the court. To avail bankruptcy under chapter 13 you need to fulfill some conditions by law. Jones story will help you to better understand all about it. To alleviate the burden he filed for credit card bankruptcy, one of the options in the Freedom Debt Relief program.

Jones had a whopping $34000 credit card debt and a medical condition which was taking in a good proportion out of his income. He had been out of a job for more than 6 months and this was one of the major factors responsible for his deteriorating financial condition as he was living on plastic entirely during those jobless months. He did find a job later but the damage was too big to get hold of by then. He was recommended to file for chapter 13 bankruptcies by his consultants.

Personally Jones was not ready to file for bankruptcy due to the stigma that is attached to it. He had some common misconceptions about bankruptcy like losing everything he had and starting with a cardboard box, fears like everyone will know about his financial struggle and also that he will never be able to apply for credit card again. After seeking consultation he was able to deal with his fears.

Bankruptcy option like chapter 13 allows you to keep all your property and there is no liquidation of your assets, rather it is called a reorganization bankruptcy, your counseling agency which organizes your debts to be paid over a period of 3 to 5 years. Jones another concern of not being able to ever get a credit was addressed when his consultants told him it won’t be long before you start getting offers though it will be at a high rate to start with.

So what is bankruptcy under Chapter 13? When your consultant advises you to file for bankruptcy under Chapter 13 of the Bankruptcy Code, the aim is to get the opportunity to repay some or all of the debts on better terms, i.e. lower or no interest, a stark contrast to bankruptcy under Chapter 7 where your debts and property are placed in the hands of the court and liquidated to pay your creditors, this type of bankruptcy is often referred to as liquidation bankruptcy.

So how does one qualify for chapter 13? You’ll have to prove to the court that you can afford to meet your payment obligations. Therefore, having a regular income is one of the major criteria to qualify but if your income is irregular or an income which is too low, the court might not allow you to file for Chapter 13. Again, the amount owed by you should not exceed $336,900. Before you can file for chapter 13 bankruptcies, you must receive credit counseling from an agency approved by the United States Trustee’s office.

The most important part of chapter 13 is the repayment plan. Your attorney will prepare new repayment plan with help from your credit consultants to best suit your situation. As per the law, the creditors are required to adhere to the repayment plan once it is approved by the court.

So if you are buried in debt and there are no better solutions to change your situation ask your credit consultants more about Chapter 13 bankruptcy, it is there for a reason!

IMF and EU approve aid for Georgia

The International Monetary Fund and the European Union approved aid packages to help Georgia recover from its conflict with Russia, which occurred in early August. The IMF approved a US$750 million loan which will allow Georgia to rebuild its currency reserves. The European Union also approved an aid package of 500 million in aid by 2010, which is expected to help internally displaced people (IDPs) and economic recovery in the form of new infrastructure. Only €100 million of the EU aid will be given to Georgia this year.

These loans are aimed to restore confidence in Georgia’s economy and send a signal to international investors that Georgia’s economy is sound. According to the IMF, international investors have been “critical to Georgia’s economic growth in recent years.”

Takatoshi Kato, Deputy Managing Director and Acting Chairman of the IMF executive committee, said the loan will “make significant resources available to replenish international reserves and bolster investor confidence, with the aim of sustaining private capital inflows that have been critical to Georgia’s economic growth in recent years.”

Georgia has requested $2 billion in international aid to help it recover from the conflict. So far, the United States has pledged $1 billion in aid. Further assistance and loans to Georgia are expected from other organizations. Kato noted that “…Georgia is expected to receive financial assistance from multilateral and bilateral donors and creditors in support of the reconstruction effort.” It is expected that an international donors’ conference will take place next month to solicit more aid for the country.

Georgia’s government expects that economic growth will be more than cut in half as a result of the conflict. Last year, Georgia’s GDP increased 12.4% and it is predicted by the IMF that growth will be less than 4 percent in the coming year.

Documents missing from the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico have been found on a USB Flash Drive during a drug bust located inside the Los Alamos trailer park, Royal Crest on October 17 and contain what police say are “classified material.” The drives were marked with symbols that indicated they belonged to the Los Alamos Laboratory.

Los Alamos has since confirmed that a breach has occurred and that at least three computer drives from the laboratory were confiscated during the raid.

“During the course of the search, officers realized that some of the items seized appeared to belong to the Los Alamos National Laboratory,” said a statement by the Los Alamos County Police Department.

A subcontractor, Justin Stone, 20 was involved in the breach of security at the lab and according to Michael Anastasio, the lab’s director, there is an “ongoing investigation.” Stone was working in Technical Area 55, an area of the lab where plutonium is kept or the X Division, where data for the designs of nuclear bombs are kept. Stone says that he was not aware of what the drives contained saying, “I have no idea what’s on it because I didn’t get a chance to look.” Stone also says that he acquired one of the drives a year ago when he traded drugs for the drive and that drive also contained information from Los Alamos Laboratory. Stone had only been living with a female friend, Jessica Quintana for no more than three weeks and was with his girlfriend Jessica Collins when police raided the home.

“I vaguely remember it contained information about nuclear waste sites around Los Alamos. I erased it and used the drive for myself,” added Stone.

Quintana, who also worked in the laboratory as an archivist, was being investigated by the FBI for charges relating to methamphetamine type offenses and was arrested when authorities executed an arrest warrant for the female. Police say a “large amount” of methamphetamine paraphernalia was discovered in her trailer during a raid by the FBI. Pipes with the remains of methamphetamine were also found at the scene and Quintana also admitted that the items belonged to her.

“This is a serious matter, and we are taking immediate steps to address it. We intend to do everything possible to guard against any criminal activity, particularly where a breach of security may be involved. We have already taken a number of steps to address potential security risks,” said Anastasio in a statement.

Drug paraphernalia along with methamphetamine drugs were also seized during the bust. Police were initially responding to a call of a domestic disturbance between Stone and his girlfriend which Stone denies was taking place.
