As technology and communication has made progress, more and more people are now looking to choose a study abroad program for their higher studies. Previously, if a student wanted to travel abroad he had to do a lot of research by perhaps visiting the embassies of the host country or attending education fairs. But now, in this age of Internet, all information you ever wanted is now at your fingertips or should we say, at your mouse-clicks! Students today can just log on to the website of the prospective university from the comfort of their home.

Most universities that offer a study abroad program have extensive information available on their website to help out the students. Everything from the history of the university to the courses offered is listed on these officially maintained websites. And if that was not enough, there are so many other websites and online forums that are a heaven for getting your queries answered satisfactorily. You can interact with the alumni of the university you are interested in and decide if the environment is suitable to your temperament or not. The internet also makes comparing study abroad programs from different universities much easier. But with so many resources available, some students feel the stress of information overload. They do not know what criteria they should be looking at to choose the right study abroad program. It is for such confused students that we list down what should be the most important things that you should look carefully at before choosing your foreign university:

Needless to say perhaps, but the first one on the list is the academic excellence of the university. It is useless to make so many efforts in gaining admission in a university with a sub-standard academic program. It may be that while some universities may have good academic programs, but their degrees are not accepted or recognized anywhere. If your prospective employers do not recognize your degree, you will not be able to get a good job. You are going to spend much time away from home; at least the fruit should be worth your ordeal. So consult the ratings of the university to gauge the soundness of its academic program. After all, nothing else matters if they do not have a good undergraduate or graduate program.

Next thing to look at is whether the university offer meets your requirements. If you are looking for a four year undergraduate degree, do not settle for a two-year diploma course only because you are getting admission in the university of your choice.

Carefully research about the country you are travelling to. Find out if you will have to learn any new languages. If you are not good at learning new languages, you might not want to get the extra stress of learning a new language along with your studies.

So before you get down to the comparison of the academic and fee structures, you should short-list the names using the 3 criteria defined above.
