Two Quick Definitions

Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery (BCDR) are two separate and related concepts that are often lumped together. Let s start with some quick definitions.

IT Business Continuity

Business Continuity refers to an organization s ability to keep vital business operations running at or near normal capacities in the event of infrastructure failure. These failures can be caused by human errors, power failures, application errors and a host of others that impact the ability of the infrastructure to properly support the organization. When speaking of Business Continuity the majority of the infrastructure remains in place and functional which is in contrast to Disaster Recovery.

IT Disaster Recovery

Disaster Recovery refers to incidents that significantly impact or make unavailable critical infrastructure. The most common examples are natural disasters and other acts of God. Planning for data protection and recovery are fundamental to disaster recovery principles.

So the idea of BCDR really is to ensure that your company or organization continues to function at or near normal capacity levels under even the most challenging conditions.

So what is the mistake? Focusing on technology first and business process priorities second

This might sound like a strange statement coming from network infrastructure experts. But buying an appliance or solution and then figuring out that it provides an incomplete or inadequate solution can be an expensive and humbling mistake! IT Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery (BCDR) isn t about appliances, power supplies, routers, switches and servers, it’s about supporting business processes.

Sounds pretty straightforward, right? Well, wrapped up in that deceptively simple concept are dozens, hundreds, perhaps even thousands of business processes, most, if not all of which are dependent upon your IT infrastructure for successful execution.

So the place to begin defining your BCDR plan is not in the server room but rather out among the business units.

For example, maybe you work for a financial institution that has to comply with Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA or PATRIOT Act regulations. Information availability is required under all conditions, including routine back-up. Fines for non-compliance and damage to reputation for failure to comply are huge.

Or

Your company processes a high volume of data entry, fulfillment processing and shipping operations around the clock. Downtime has been calculated to be $12,700 per hour.

Or

Your organization manufactures precision electronic components and your ERP and inventory management systems must be operational during the week. Downtime costs you $3500/hour. However, routine maintenance can be performed during the week.

3 different examples with 3 entirely different sets of requirements. Hopefully you see that before you can meaningfully advocate a BCDR solution you must identify, understand, and prioritize the requirements of each of the most critical processes.

To do otherwise would turn the focus of business continuity away from business processes toward Information Technology. While important, Information Technology, servers, switches, routers and other parts of your network infrastructure are only tools to help your business run more efficiently.

So, as I said at the beginning of this paper, Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery planning should begin within the business units of your organization not in the server room!

This year, four breeds of dogs are competing for the first time in the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, at Madison Square Garden in New York City, United States.

The new breeds making their Westminister debuts this year, are the Plott, a hunting hound originally bred by two German immigrant brothers in North Carolina; the Tibetan Mastiff, once described by Marco Polo as “tall as a donkey with a voice as powerful as that of a lion.”; the Beauceron, a herding dog originally bred to herd flocks of sheep in France, later used to sniff out landmines and send messages during the World Wars; and the Swedish Vallhund, a breed dating back to the time of the Vikings, used on farms to catch vermin, herd cattle, and as a guard dog, noted for its double coat and harness markings.

This brings the number of unique breeds competing in the famous dog show to 169.

The Plott, the Beauceron, and the Vallhund were shown on Monday. The Tibetan Mastiff will be shown tonight as part of the Working Group.

A study published on June 18 in the American Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences has found a link between the consumption of foie gras and other meat products and a number of diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes mellitus type 2, tuberculosis, and amyloidosis. The link exists in genetically susceptible individuals.

The study was lead by Alan Solomon, M.D., a professor and researcher at the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine and the director of the Human Immunology and Cancer / Alzheimer’s Disease and Amyloid-Related Disorders Research Program. Amyloidoses are a group of disease states caused by the deposition in vital organs of proteins in the form of fibrils, causing a range of symptoms such as swelling and kidney damage. The deposition of amyloid beta in the brain is central in the origin of the disease process of Alzheimer’s disease. Foie gras is made from the livers of ducks or geese that have been force-fed.

According to Solomon, “we posit that this and perhaps other forms of amyloidosis may be transmissible, akin to the infectious nature of prion-related illnesses [such as mad cow disease]. In addition to foie gras, meat derived from sheep and seemingly healthy cattle may represent other dietary sources of [the fibrils]. People with a family history of Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis or other amyloid-associated diseases should avoid consuming foie gras and other foods that may be contaminated with fibrils,” continued Solomon.

In an attempt to speak with as many candidates as possible during the 2008 Canadian federal election, Wikinews has talked via email with John Kittredge. John is a candidate in Toronto, Ontario’s St. Paul riding, running under the Libertarian Party banner. Libertarians are a minor, registered political party; they are looking to earn their first ever seat in the House of Commons.

Incumbent Carolyn Bennett of the Liberals is running against Libertarian Kittridge, Conservative Heather Jewell, New Democrat Anita Agrawal, and Justin Erdman, a Green. Bennett was the Minister of Health under previous Prime Minister Paul Martin’s Liberal government. Since it was created in 1935, the riding has been batted about between the Liberals and the now defunct Progessive Conservative party.

The following is an interview with Mr. Kittridge, conducted via email. The interview has had very limited editing, to eliminate in-text mentions of website addresses, but is otherwise left exactly as sent to Wikinews.

People need extra storage for many reasons. Some people are moving to a new home that hasn’t closed yet, but, their old home has already sold. They’ll have to store their possessions until the purchase of their new home has gone through. Moving and storage companies offer both services. They have rental trucks available to help with moving, starting from a one or two room truck all the way to a seven room truck. They have boxes and other moving supplies available for purchase to make a move much easier.

There are small and large boxes suitable for packing knick-knacks, glasses, dishes, coffee pots, photos, bed clothes and other items. Moving companies also have plastic bags, bubble wrap, various tapes and boxes to make your move much easier and quicker. Ask the company you talk to about any money-saving discounts they have available for the month. Log onto Ustorwichita.com and read about one company that has quite a few climate controlled Self Storage units available right now.

There are also other companies in the area that have storage units for rent. Most of them offer services for customers to choose one and pay the rent online. They offer extra help by putting size guides on their websites. After a person makes their move to a home, they’ll still need storage space for all the extras they may not want to unpack immediately. If clients have televisions, computers, printers and other electronic equipment, they should always choose a Self Storage company that offers climate control units to avoid dampness during weather changes.

If you need to store everything, you’ll have to pick the right size unit that can handle it. For instance, if your old home was four or five bedrooms, your best choice would be a 10? x 30? unit to be sure everything will fit in it properly. An average bedroom would call for a 10? x 10? size to hold a smaller number of belongings. Storage companies have websites that state very clearly what they offer. Whether you’re moving and want to rent a moving truck or you need to put your belongings in a safe place until your home is ready, leasing a storage unit is the right way to go.

Buffalo, New York —A massive warehouse complex of at least 5 buildings caught on fire in Buffalo, New York on 111 Tonawanda Street, sending a plume of thick, jet black colored smoke into the air that could be seen as far away as 40 miles.

As of 6:40 a.m., the fire was under control, and firefighters were attempting to stop it from spreading, but could not get to the center of the fire because of severe amounts of debris. Later in the morning, the fire was extinguished.

“The fire is mostly under debris at this point. It’s under control, but it’s under some debris. We really can’t get to it. We’re just going to have to keep on pouring water on it so it doesn’t spread,” said Thomas Ashe, the fire chief for the North Buffalo based fire division who also added that at one point, at least 125 firefighters were on the scene battling the blaze. One suffered minor injures and was able to take himself to the hospital to seek medical attention.

Shortly after 8:00 p.m. as many as 3 explosions rocked the warehouse sending large mushroom clouds of thick black smoke into the air. After the third explosion, heat could be felt more than 100 feet away. The fire started in the front, one story building then quickly spread to three others, but fire fighters managed to stop the flames from spreading onto the 3 story building all the way at the back.

According to a Buffalo Police officer, who wished not to be named, the fire began at about 7:00 p.m. [Eastern time], starting as a one alarm fire. By 8:00 p.m., three fire companies were on the scene battling the blaze. Police also say that a smaller fire was reported in the same building on Saturday night, which caused little damage.

At the start of the fire, traffic was backed up nearly 4 miles on the 198 expressway going west toward the 190 Interstate and police had to shut down the Tonawanda street exit because the road is too close to the fire.

At one point, traffic on the 198 was moving so slow, at least a dozen people were seen getting out of their cars and walking down the expressway to watch the fire. That prompted as many as 10 police cars to be dispatched to the scene to force individuals back into their cars and close off one of the 2 lanes on the westbound side.

One woman, who wished not to be named as she is close to the owner of the warehouse, said the building is filled with “classic cars, forklifts, and money” and that owner “does not have insurance” coverage on the property. The building is not considered abandoned, but firefighters said that it is vacant.

Officials in Fort Erie, Ontario were also swamped with calls to fire departments when the wind blew the smoke over the Niagra River and into Canada.

It is not known what caused the fire, but a car is suspected to have caught on fire and there are reports from police and hazmat crews, that there were also large barrels of diesel fuel being stored in one building. Firefighters say the cause of the blaze is being treated as “suspicious.” The ATF is investigating the fire and will bring dogs in to search the debris.

The owner of a New Jersey real estate investment firm has been charged with using $2 million of his company’s money for construction at his home and other projects not related to work.

Gary Klein, owner of the Asbury Park-based REI Group Inc., surrendered himself to police after a Monmouth County grand jury indicted him on one count of theft by deception charges.

The charges were the result of a three-year investigation into his practices. Klein, 45, of Colts Neck Township, faces up to 10 years in state prison if convicted. Klein was released Friday after posting $75,000 bail.

Klein attracted clients by telling them he would invest their money in projects that would result in returns of 12 and 85 percent. Prosecutors said the actions mirrored those of a Ponzi scheme.

Robert Weir, Klein’s attorney, said the operation was not a Ponzi scheme, but legitimate business investments that went bad as the economy declined. Weir also said Klein hired a receiver to try and return the investors’ money once the investments started to go sour.

“It’s a shame that a business that experienced a turn in the real estate market is now being treated as a criminal problem. That was not Mr. Klein’s intent,” Weir said to The Star-Ledger.

Weir said the investments were used for building rehabilitation projects in Asbury Park and the construction of Florida condominium complexes, but authorities said Klein used the money to repay earlier investors who were cashing out, as well to help build his own home.

Grant Cuevas

A person can have plastic surgery popularly known as cosmetic surgery for a thousands reasons. The prices charged will vary depending on the surgeon. For example, if he or she is well respected in the medical community the price will be obviously higher. Cosmetic surgery cost will also vary on the procedures applied for both men and women. If you want a face-lift to give the appearance of youthfulness, it will cost you approximately five thousands dollars per facelift for an ordinary surgeon. Otherwise, you can expect to pay up to ten thousands dollars in the case of a prominent cosmetic surgeon.

If you are a woman and you feel that the size of your breasts is inadequate, you can undergo a breast augmentation. It will cost you between five thousand and seven thousands dollars. This does not depend on whether there will be use of saline or silicone since the price will be the same in both cases. Liposuction is also another popular procedure, which is performed for both men and women. Women will usually pay more to have liposuction cosmetic surgery than men because women s bodies have more body fats and have more fat deposits areas. In Women, fat deposits are removed from stomach, lower arms, buttocks, thighs and love handles while in men they are removed from stomach and waist only.
