The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) has declared an area of disturbed weather north of Puerto Rico Tropical Storm Danny today, skipping the tropical depression stage.

A statement by the NHC said “a general northwestward motion with a decrease in forward speed is expected today and Thursday, with a turn toward the north-northwest expected on Friday.” This path should bring Danny near the North Carolina early this weekend, and possibly threatening the New England region by Sunday. While the storm is currently weak and disorganized, forecasters say the storm could reach Category 1 intensity on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale. However, it is not expected to be as strong as the previous storm, Hurricane Bill.

At this point we are monitoring the storm

The center’s most recent forecast discussion on the tropical storm said “The forecast track is roughly parallel to the U.S. East Coast…and any deviation from the track could make a large difference in what areas get impacted by Danny”.

Some residents in the northeast U.S. are already monitoring Danny. Long Island, recovering from coastal flooding just last week as Hurricane Bill passed offshore, might suffer another hit.

Danny is currently situated about 445 mi (715 km) east of Nassau, Bahamas, and has winds of 45 mph (75 km/h). It is moving west-northwest at 16 kt. All interests along the East Coast are urged to keep an eye on the developing storm over coming days.

As winter approaches each year, it can be important for homeowners to have a repair person from a Heating contractor At Eastside Heating & Air Conditioning come to their home to inspect their heating system to ensure that it is not in need repairs and ready for the colder temperatures that the following months will bring. While there are some maintenance tasks a homeowner my be able to handle on his or her own, it can still be a good idea to have a professional handle the work, as they can give the unit a thorough inspection. Often this can result in repair issues being discovered before they cause a significant problem.

A technician will generally first want to check the thermostat on the unit and make sure it is working properly. They can do this by using a secondary temperature gauge such as an infrared thermostat gun and then comparing it to the temperature reading on the thermostat. If these two do not match, the thermostat will need to be adjusted accordingly.

Once the thermostat is tested, the Heating contractor At Eastside Heating & Air Conditioning will need to inspect the burner on the system. Many times the burner can be checked for problems just by looking at the color of the flames it produces. If flames are blue and steady then the unit is operating properly. If the flames are yellow or orange and flickering, the burner may be dirty can the unit is not getting enough air to operate properly. A repair person will need to spend time cleaning the burner and the burner tubes on the unit if this is the case.

The blower on the system can also become very dirty as well. Having a dirty system not only can be dangerous in some cases but it can cause the unit to operate much harder, which can decrease the length of time the unit will be in operation. In addition, dirty units require more power to operate and this can have a direct impact on the energy costs for the home. Cleaning the blower system is the best way to keep the unit clean. The filter will need to be inspected and replaced if it is dirty. The blower should be vacuumed out, both inside and out using a shop or home vacuum cleaner. Vents or grilles should be cleaned with a stiff brush.

With the 2014 Winter Paralympics set for March, Wikinews sought comment from U.S. Representative Jackie Speier, who serves California’s 14th congressional district about the event and how current U.S. policies impact people with disabilities. Elected to the U.S. House in 2008, she serves on the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and the House Armed Services Committee. For the first time ever, the Paralympics will be broadcast live in the U.S. on network television.

((Wikinews)) : Will “Obamacare” have a positive or negative impact on the lives of people with disabilities?

Jackie Speier: By-and-large the Affordable Care Act will have a significant and lasting beneficial impact on persons with disabilities […] Most importantly, pre-existing conditions will no longer prevent persons with disabilities from obtaining health insurance. Lifetime limits on medical expenses will be removed and preventive services will be free. All of these provisions of the law create health insurance that is highly supportive of good health outcomes for everyone, but in particular for those who have a disability.

((WN)) : Are there any Paralympic athletes or elite athletes with disabilities from your district that people should know more about?

Jackie Speier: There are currently two Paralympic athletes who train or live in my district that people will definitely hear more about in the coming years. One is a young woman named Allie Hyatt who trains in Judo with Willy Cahill, [whom] I have also trained with. Allie, who is visually impaired and just 15, has already won numerous awards and will participate in the Youth Olympic Games next year. She is sure to be a force in the Judo world for many, many years. Hyatt lives in San Francisco and Cahill is the founder and CEO of the Blind Judo Foundation.

Another great athlete is Mohamend Lahna who is training for the Rio Olympics in 2016 for the paratriathlon,” Speier continued. “He is from Morocco originally but lives now in San Mateo and trains daily at the College of San Mateo. He runs marathons with a prosthetic leg and has his sights set on winning several medals atworld and Olympic events in the future. Lahna has proximal femoral focal deficiency (PFFD), a birth defect that affects the hip and pelvis. He is married and has a 1-year-old child.

Wikinews also sought comment from other members of Congress, including John K. Delaney, Mike Honda, Kyrsten Sinema, Eric Swalwell, Raúl M. Grijalva and Ann Kirkpatrick but at publication time, had received no response.

Everybody tells you that in order to lose weight you need to eat less calories. For many people the next logical choice to lose weight more quickly is to go on a fast. It seems reasonable that not eating any food will force the body to lose weight, and this is true.

However, is going on a fast for several days, or even a week or more, healthy?

When done properly, fasting can be a good thing for your body, because it not only causes you to lose weight, but helps the body eliminate toxins as well. When fasting for weigh loss it is tempting to drink nothing but water, but this can be very dangerous for the body.

When you go on a water fast for more than a day or two, you can wreak havoc on your blood sugar levels, causing it to fluctuate between being too high or too low. You are literally starving your body of essential nutrients it needs to keep functioning properly. Maybe you’ve heard of people who go on a fast to protest something and then end up in the hospital with a feeding tube. This could happen to you too, that’s why water fasts are generally discouraged.

However, there is a healthier way for you to fast. It’s much better for you to go on a one day fast, than a longer extended fast. You see, you want the fast to help you lose weight without side effects.

This means you need to understand a little about how the body works. Food is fuel to the body and supplies needed nutrients. When you are overweight, the body has accumulated too many fat cells along with unhealthy toxins.

You see, when you starve the body of the nutrients it needs, it will automatically slow down your metabolism and use what calories it has in reserve more efficiently. As you know, slowing down your metabolism makes weight loss a lot harder. Those going on extreme water fast diets will initially lose a lot of water weight, but when they resume eating again, they’ll quickly gain back all the weight they lost and more.

The body just doesn’t like to be starved and when that happens it will work even harder to retain every single calorie that you consume. This is a natural survival mechanism built into our bodies to help keep us alive. Since you cannot fight nature, it’s best to stay away from any kind of extreme fasting.

On the positive side, a 24-hour fast will give your body a needed rest and let it do some healing. Toxins will also be eliminated.

This mini fast will reduce your cravings for certain fatty foods and cleanse your body, so that when you do resume eating, it will be much easier for you to continue down a healthy path of steady weight loss.

You can make your own natural juice by blending fresh fruits and vegetables into a tasty drink that will supply you with plenty of nutrients while fasting. There are lots of juicing recipes online that you can use to create the ultimate healthy drink.

Again, you don’t want to stay on a juice fast for too long. Think of a fast as simply cleansing and healing your body. It is a short term way to assist your in reaching your long term weight loss goals.

Venezuelan President Chavez in Beijing to boost trade

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez arrived in the Chinese capital of Beijing, Wednesday, beginning a visit that will see new agreements to increase China’s investment in Venezuela’s petroleum, telecoms, agriculture and transport. Chavez says that his country intends to boost its oil exports to China to 500,000 barrels a day within five years, quadrupling its current exports, and up to one million barrels a day by 2012.

“Within five years we’ll arrive at half a million barrels (a day) to China. We are currently exporting close to 150,000 barrels (a day), and next year we will double that,” Chavez said.

“The oil issue is of utmost importance because we are diversifying the petroleum business. We are moving toward a new petroleum model,” said Chavez, speaking on Venezuelan state television from China. “It’s one step more in a strategic alliance.”

Chavez met Chinese President Hu Jintao on Thursday, senior leader Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao on Friday. Following Thursday’s meeting, Chavez said that Jintao agreed to support Venezuela’s bid to join the United Nations Security Council as a non-permanent member. He is also discussing Chinese involvement in developing his countries gold and coal mining industries, according to reports.

The countries are also signing agreements for Chinese assistance in building a petrochemical plant within the Amuay oil refinery in western Venezuela.

Agreements are expected to be signed with two of China’s state owned oil companies to develop and export crude from Venezuela’s Orinoco river basin as well as to approve the sale of Chinese oil tankers to Venezuela.

While the United States remains the leading importer of Venezuela’s oil, Chavez’ left wing government has sought to diversify its trading partners in an attempt to reduce its reliance on the United States and promote a “multi-polar” world order.

China is the world’s second largest consumer of petroleum and is in need of increased oil supplies in order to maintain its rapid pace of economic growth.

Chavez told Venezuelan state television that increased trade with China and Russia will help boost Venezuela to medium-power status. He claimed that investment agreements with China will transfer technology to his country and help Venezuela escape dependency.

Wikinews extended invitations by e-mail on March 23 to multiple candidates running in the Texas’ 6th congressional district special election of May 1 to fill a vacancy left upon the death of Republican congressman Ron Wright. Of them, the office of Democrat Daryl Eddings, Sr. agreed to answer some questions by phone March 30 about their campaigns and policies. The following is the interview with Ms Chatham on behalf of Mr Eddings, Sr.

Eddings is a federal law enforcement officer and senior non-commissioned officer in the US military. His experience as operations officer of an aviation unit in the California National Guard includes working in Los Angeles to control riots sparked by the O. J. Simpson murder case and the police handling of Rodney King, working with drug interdiction teams in Panama and Central America and fighting in the Middle East. He is the founder of Operation Battle Buddy, which has under his leadership kept in touch with over 20 thousand veterans and their families. He was born in California, but moved to Midlothian, Texas. He endeavours to bring “good government, not no government”. Campaign manager Faith Chatham spoke to Wikinews on matters ranging from healthcare to housing.

An Inside Elections poll published on March 18 shows Republican candidate Susan Wright, the widow of Ron Wright, is ahead by 21% followed by Democrat Jana Sanchez with 17% and Republican Jake Ellzey with 8% with a 4.6% margin of error among 450 likely voters. The district is considered “lean Republican” by Inside Elections and voted 51% in favour of Donald Trump in last year’s US presidential election. This is down from 54% for Trump in 2016’s presidential election, the same poll stated.

Senior Chinese official executed for spying for Taiwan

A Chinese government official convicted of working for the Taiwanese government has been executed, and thousands of civil workers viewed the taped trial for “educational purposes” on Monday. The prisoner’s name was Tong Daning and was in his mid-50’s and held a rank just under “Assistant-Minister” before he was found guilty of espionage. According to the anonymous sources, Daning had been selling state sources for over 15 years, making a profit of about US$250,000.

Daning is the highest ranking person executed in China since 1999, when a Major General and Senior Colonel were executed for selling state secrets. China and Taiwan have been spying on each other ever since 1949, when the People’s Republic of China was officially created, but that has not stopped over 1 million Taiwanese citizens from working and investing over 100 billion USD in China. There have been many cases of espionage within the last few years, with all but two resulting in a death sentence.

Preschool education is a hot topic among parents and early childhood educators today. If you are the parent of a preschooler (or younger child) you need to ask yourself why you should care about preschool learning. There are three key reasons why you should not only concern yourself with your child’s preschool education but become actively involved in it as well.

First, you must remember that preschool education is the foundation for your child’s education. The skills and knowledge (not to mention aptitude and attitude) that your child develops in the preschool years will have a dramatic impact on your child’s success when formal schooling begins as well as life success. Today we expect children to know more by the time they start kindergarten. While previous generations learned basics like color identification and the alphabet in school, today’s children are expected to possess these basic skills by the time they start kindergarten.

Another reason to care about your child’s preschool education is that by actively promoting and encouraging your child’s preschool learning you will promote his or her self esteem as well. Help your child gain confidence by making learning fun and easy at this age and you will help make your child an eager lifelong learner.

Finally, preschool education is important because it can give your child the edge in a competitive world and education climate. While children who do not receive the fundamentals during their preschool years will be taught the alphabet, counting, shapes and colors when they begin their formal education they will be behind the children who already possess that knowledge and skill set. Do you want your child to be at the head of the class or lagging behind?

Concerning yourself with your child’s preschool learning does not mean you have to enroll your child in a formal preschool program. You can work with your child at home if you prefer. The important thing is that you make sure your child is working to learning the skills they will need to prepare for kindergarten and learning to read.

You should care about your young child’s preschool education because preschool learning is the foundation for formal education, it can boost your child’s self esteem, and it can give your child the edge they need for lifelong success.
